There was once an 11in model of the MacBook Air, but that was discontinued a long time ago, and is no longer available from Apple. It might still be available second-hand from sites like eBay and CEX , though. The MacBook Pro range gives you the option of two different screen sizes.

Part of the range was updated in May with new processors, and then in July the entry-level 13in MacBook Pro models were updated as well. Unfortnately that July update also saw the rest of the range get a price increase in the UK. We have a review of the 15in MacBook Pro here. Its display changes depending on the task you are undertaking, and it is fully customisable too. It also features Touch ID, bringing fingerprint security to the Mac following its introduction to the iPhone and iPad.

The 12in MacBook was the lightest and thinnest MacBook that Apple has sold, but since being discontinued in July it can now be bought second-hand only we suggest the Refurbished Store or eBay. And even if you're prepared to buy an older unit, be aware that there are sacrifices to be made in terms of power, and the single USB-C port is also a downside, especially if you rely on peripherals when using your laptop on the go. If you're set on buying one of Apple's current laptops, the best choice for portability is the MacBook Air , which isn't much bigger or heavier than the MacBook was.

Battery life is solid, giving us around nine hours in testing and the all-metal jacket gives it a premium feel. In terms of ports, you get two USB 3.

Most convertible laptops are either incredibly expensive or restricted to a Chromebook performance. The LG Gram 2 in 1 hits the sweet spot, offering a quality ultrabook and a decent tablet bundled into one product. With a high-speed CPU performance, long-lasting battery and a plethora of ports, the Gram 2 in 1 is a fantastic option for office workers. By day its a powerhouse portable ready for your spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentation, and by night it can be flipped into a tablet for Netflix in bed and Microsoft Paint doodling thanks to the boxed stylus.

Plus, the design does feel awkward once in tablet mode, with the keyboard sitting at the back and the absence of a volume button. If this is a stumbling block for you, then maybe the LG Gram would be a better choice. The Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is lightweight, flexible and pretty powerful.

Our review model ran full fat Windows 10 out of the box, not the safety scissors Windows 10 S version Microsoft sometimes installs on its Surface devices, like the Surface Go. An excellent A downside is the small number of ports and the absence of USB-C. With the keyboard attached, the Surface Go transforms into a versatile and sturdy worker that is well-suited to light PC work. Performance however is middling, and while the Surface Go is glossy and stylish, it is not cheap.

Real-world testing showed that the inch MacBook Pro could render 4K video quickly in Final Cut Pro, but it took a sizeable chunk out of the battery. Downsides include a lack of any ports besides Thunderbolt 3 and the overall price of the series. There are alternative form factors, too. Two-in-ones have reversible screens that can be versatile in small spaces, while tablet hybrids are great for drawing and taking notes.

The latter often come with attachable keyboards for when you want to get typing work done.

Apple is still selling very old and expensive computers – these are the ones you shouldn't buy

There are many other areas I could expand into, such as software availability, specific ergonomic and design concerns and much more. But I am not sure if there is any value in expanding this discussion even further, as we have already covered a lot. At the end of the day, the choice of a system does not really matter. Both Macs and PCs are good enough to be used for a variety of uses, including post-processing.

I provided my arguments and you can feel free to weigh each one and see which are more important for you. For me personally, the PC makes more sense to use for post-processing, which has been and will continue to be my platform of choice. But for others who are not as tech-savvy, or perhaps have bad PC experience, the Mac might be the way to go. It is simpler to use, it is more intuitive, well-designed and will probably have less problems in the long run.

Current Mac models are Intel based and are able to run any of the platforms, including Windows and Linux, that regular PCs can run. Tools like Boot Camp even help to facilitate running Windows on a Mac. On the other hand, running OS X on a stock PC usually requires some careful hardware selection and a few hacks.

John, very strange, but for some reason many of the edits from today did not make it to the published article. I am in the process of recovering the lost areas. Yes, Macs can run Windows via Boot Camp or in a virtualized environment, but from my past experience, the support and the stability were not there.

Perhaps things have changed lately — I might give it another try. I remember how messy it was to try to use the keyboard and the touchpad, Boot Camp drivers were terrible for both.

Handling Mac and PC employee preferences

I ended up going back to OS X after all the frustrations. I am a huge fan of Apple hardware but never could get used to the Mac OS. So the first thing I did was to boot-camp the machine and run it strictly in windows mode. You can still boot back into Mac OS anytime you like. You will just need to purchase a legitimate license for Windows I find it mildly humorous that the most stable machine to run Windows on…is a Mac!

Eventually a friend said try a Mac. I did and it immediately seemed beautiful, clear, logical and intuitive to me. It was like coming home and I have not felt tempted tp stray since. It just shows how different we all are. Funny, I find the MAC to be confusing and restricting. Working with a MAC every now and then makes me really frustrated. Windows was always logical and made sense. Windows is functional. Not even close but then again neither is IOS or Linux. You could try Darktable or RawTherapee on Linux. Been using it now witj Ubuntub although not for professional usage and so far they are good :.

In other parts of the world, they drive on the right and think that is normal. So … just because you learned one way to do something does not mean other way of doing it is wrong. To your comment regarding learning something one way or the other using the example of driving, I totally agree.
